TEIVOVO.COM – TEAM FIJI

Kitione Salawa (Flanker)

Full name
: Kitione Salawa
Fiji club:
Gaunavou, Nadi
Colonial Cup team: Crusaders
Born: 26 July 1976 in Lautoka
Height: 1m90 (6’3")
Weight: 87kg

Test debut: 2003 vs Tonga in Nadi
6 caps (11 games)

A versatile flanker, Kitione Salawa’s strengths lie in his mobility and energy – qualities that made him Fiji’s first-choice ball hunter at the 2003 Rugby World Cup.

Salawa first donned the Fiji jumper during the South Africa 7s in December 2001, and received a full call-up the following year.

Enjoying an outstanding 2002 season with Nadi, Salawa helped his province win the famed Sullivan-Farebrother Trophy then reach the final of the Telecom Fiji Cup. His efforts were rewarded with a trip to Queensland with the Fiji A team, then selection for Fiji’s tour of the UK in November 2002.

He made his Test debut on his home ground, Prince Charles Park, against Tonga in July as Fiji won 34-31. Since joining the national squad, the dreadlocked flanker has made tremendous advancements in his game, and went into this World Cup as one of Fiji’s most dynamic forwards.

Hailing from Ba, Salawa grew up in in his mother’s village in Nadi where he played all his rugby. During his Primary school days, he played fullback. Off the field, he is one of the clowns in the team.
